About Us

The firm’s origins can be traced back to the late 1920's and early 1930’s when Charles Stone and Albert Lawless formed the original partnership of Charles Stone Lawless.

John Cottrill joined the partnership in the 1960’s having previously taken over his late father’s practice and from that point the firm became known as Cottrill Stone Lawless.

Charles Stone and Albert Lawless retired in the 1970’s, each of them after long and distinguished careers.  Under John Cottrill’s command the practice continued with Albert’s son, Ian, and his nephew, Howard.

The practice continued to develop and grow by amalgamating with sole practitioner practices and by the recruitment, development and promotion of “home grown” newly qualified solicitors. Philip Mogg and Anne Irwin joined as trainee solicitors in 1974 and 1982 and both were promoted to partnership shortly after qualifying.

Cottrills is proud of its long history which has served to make it well known and well respected in Manchester, the North West and beyond. The firm continues to thrive today under the direction of managing partner, Anne Irwin.
